6 Simple Healthy Snacks to Have on the Go

Looking for some easy and healthy snack ideas to munch on during your day? Check out these ideas, all of which are great to grab on your way out the door when you are in the midst of a busy schedule!

1.      Fruit with Nut Butter: Apple slices and a nut butter of your choice make for an excellent snack. Plus, you can get a dose of healthy fats and protein from the nut butter. “There are 6.7 grams of protein in a serving of almond butter, and 7.1 grams of protein in a serving of peanut butter.”[1] Protein is a good source of long term energy, which can help you push through your day.

2.      Mixed Nuts: Nuts are a highly nutritious snack that fit into a wide variety of diets. On average,  one ounce of mixed nuts can contain 173 calories, 5g of protein, 16g of healthy fat, 6g of carbs, 3g of fiber, and a variety of vitamins and minerals including vitamin E, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, manganese, and selenium.[2] Talk about packing a punch!

3.      Cheese and Whole Wheat Crackers: If you love a charcuterie board, consider tossing this snack in your bag. “Cheese and crackers can provide a source of healthy carbohydrates and protein. Crackers made with whole grains provide a source of dietary fiber, an indigestible carbohydrate that keeps you regular and helps fight constipation. The fiber content of crackers depends on the variety you choose -- wheat crackers provide 1.1 grams of fiber per serving, while 7-grain crackers provide 2.7 grams. Crackers and cheese also contain protein, providing amino acids your body needs to maintain healthy and strong tissue. An ounce of cheddar cheese provides 7 grams of protein, an equivalent serving of Swiss provides 7.6 grams, while a serving of wheat or 7-grain crackers contains 2.8 or 4.2 grams of protein, respectively.”[3]

4.      Edamame: For such a small green veggie, edamame is somewhat of a superfood. In addition to containing all nine essential amino acids, lots of fiber, calcium, magnesium, and vitamin K, edamame is also a great source of protein. Just one cup of edamame contains 14g of protein.[4]

5.      Yogurt with Fruit: This simple combo is a delicious snack that is very easy to prep ahead of time. Additionally, you can customize it to your preference—strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, peaches, the list goes on and each one has their own health benefits. If you are short on time or fresh produce is not readily available, you can always use frozen berries as an alternative. Or, if you feel so inclined, toss everything in the blender for a simple and nutritious smoothie!

6.      Hummus with Veggie Sticks: Hummus is full of vitamins and minerals including folate, magnesium, protein, zinc, iron, and many more. Additionally, hummus is great for people with food intolerances, as it is naturally gluten-, nut-, and dairy-free. Of course, it is always wise to check the label if you are buying pre-made hummus from the store since different varieties and flavors from various companies could contain an ingredient you might be avoiding.[5]
