5 Summer Skincare Tips

As you have fun in the sun, it is important to make sure you are taking care of your skin. The summer presents different challenges from the winter months, namely the increased exposure to light and heat, so here are a few tips to keep your skin glowing:

1.      Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! We cannot stress this one enough. It is absolutely essential to be sure you are protecting your skin from harmful UV rays for a multitude of reasons, not the least of which is skin cancer. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. “Current estimates are that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime” and “it is estimated that approximately 9,500 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer every day.”[1] The AAD recommends applying sunscreen that is SPF 30, waterproof, and offers broad spectrum protection, meaning both UVA and UVB rays. And do not forget your lips! Grab a lip balm with SPF to keep your kisser in check.

2.      Seek shade. In addition to frequent sunscreen applications, it is a good idea to seek shade when possible. The sun is harshest from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM, so be conscious of that when you are out and about. If possible, wear a hat with a wide brim or consider carrying a pretty summer parasol!

3.      Give burned skin some TLC. If you did happen to get a bit of a sunburn, make sure you give that skin some extra love while it heals. Aloe vera gels and lotions are available at most drug stores and can take some of the sting out of a burn. Also, you might consider trying to lower the temperature of your bath or shower. Very hot water is not great for your skin so something more lukewarm—or even cool if you can stand it—will feel delicious in the summer heat. Plus, a cool shower could help reduce the risk of acne.[2]

4.      Hydrate. It is important to keep your body hydrated no matter what the time of year, but your body needs more water in hotter weather. “As the weather heats up, your body starts to sweat to regulate its temperature. In all, you have 2.6 million sweat glands working to keep you cool by releasing fluids through your pores. The key is constantly replenishing this fluid loss.”[3] Trust us, your skin will thank you for the hydration!
