5 Tips for Keeping Your Home Workspace Organized
Even if you thrive in chaos, too much chaos in your workspace can be detrimental to your productivity. Pens go missing, important documents are buried in drawers, and that one important thing you needed appears to have grown legs and walked away. Whether you are new to organization or you have been binging Netflix shows about rainbow-coordinating your belongings, check out these tips for keeping your workspace functional for your productivity.
1. Clear out the trash. No judgment—we have all been there. Empty coffee cups, food wrappers, scribbled notes for projects you turned in last week; build up can happen. Take five minutes and clear out the junk!
2. Organize your drawers. Being able to find what you need at a moment’s notice can make all the difference. If you do not have the budget for fancy drawer compartment organizers, look around your house to see what you have on hand! Shoe boxes and their lids are great for bigger dividers and disposable cups are great for pens and small items like paper clips or spare packets of Happy. Get creative!
3. Keep only what you need on your desk. Do you constantly use the stapler? Keep it on your desk! If you only use it periodically, the stapler can happily live in a drawer and out of your way. Think of your desk space as essential real estate; only keep what matters most at hand.
4. Limit your personal items. We are not suggesting you completely remove all of your personalization from your desk—those are the things that keep you happy! We are, however, suggesting that you maybe not keep every photo you have ever taken of your children on your desk. Pick a favorite or two and move the rest elsewhere. If you would like, you can even swap out the photos periodically or invest in a digital picture frame that will rotate them for you!
5. Do a small reset at the end of each day. At the end of your workday, take five minutes to reset your desk. Not only is it a good ritual to help you close off your day, but you will appreciate walking in the next morning to a desk that is ready to use!
