Autumnal Yoga: Poses and Practices to Align with the Season

As the vibrant colors of autumn paint the world with shades of red, orange, and gold, there is a unique opportunity to connect with the changing season through yoga. The fall season invites us to slow down, turn inward, and embrace balance. Join us as we explore a selection of yoga poses that align with the essence of autumn to help you find harmony, strength, and mindfulness during this transitional time of year.

•   Tree Pose (Vrikshasana): Tree Pose symbolizes the shedding of old leaves and the growth of new ones, fostering balance and stability. Begin by standing tall and shift your weight onto your left foot and bend your right knee. Place the sole of your right foot against your inner left thigh or calf, avoiding the knee. Find your balance, press your palms together in front of your chest, and gaze at a fixed point. Inhale deeply, feeling your spine elongate, and exhale, grounding through your standing foot.

•   Child's Pose (Balasana): This pose encourages introspection and relaxation, like the natural introspection of fall. Begin in a kneeling position with your big toes touching and knees apart. Sit back onto your heels and extend your arms forward, lowering your chest toward the ground. Rest your forehead on the mat, keeping your arms extended and palms flat. Breathe deeply and surrender to the pose.

•   Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana): Downward-Facing Dog awakens the body and mind, resembling the stretching and renewal of fall. Start on your hands and knees with your wrists under your shoulders and knees under your hips. Tuck your toes under and lift your hips toward the ceiling, forming an inverted V shape. Keep your knees slightly bent and your heels reaching toward the ground as you press your hands firmly into the mat and lengthen your spine.

•   Twisting Seated Forward Bend (Marichyasana III): This pose aids in digestion, which is particularly beneficial during fall when our bodies adapt to seasonal changes (and upcoming holiday meals). Sit with your legs extended in front of you. Bend your right knee and place your right foot flat on the floor. Inhale and lift your left arm, then exhale and twist to the right, hooking your left elbow outside your right knee. Lengthen your spine with each inhale and deepen the twist with each exhale.

 

            As autumn sweeps in, it offers a valuable opportunity for self-reflection, balance, and renewal.
