6 Tips to Spring Clean Your Home Office

With spring just around the corner, it is a time for new beginnings and refreshes. This can be particularly important when it comes to your home office, whether you work from home full-time or just utilize it for your side gig. Especially during and immediately after the holidays, it can be easy for clutter to pile up, which makes spring cleaning ideal to keep things tidy. Check out these 6 tips to reset your office and start fresh!

1.      Not sure where to start? Take a picture! It can be overwhelming to tackle a space, so giving yourself some distance can help put things into perspective. Take a photo with your phone and look at it with fresh eyes. More than likely, your eye will be drawn to one area or another, and you can start there.

2.      Take out the trash. Yes, the one overflowing with papers underneath your desk. We all get behind on the trash from time to time, and there is no shame in that. But taking out the trash is an easy step that can help you check something off your list and get you off to a positive start.

3.      Declutter your paper. Home offices are prone to a lot of paper build up, and it can be helpful to keep up on the excess. If your organization plan currently looks more like piles than a tidy color-coded system, gather everything together in one spot so you can get a sense of the volume with which you are working. Next, work through it piece by piece, filing what you need to keep and shredding and/or tossing what you do not. If your papers are already reasonably organized, make a sweep for items you can downsize, or do a digital declutter and sort out your email’s inbox. While you are at it, unsubscribe from all those promotional emails you automatically send to the trash without opening.

4.      Clean your computer. That is, physically clean it! Wipe off your screen with a microfiber cloth, dust your keyboard, and organize that Gordian knot of cords.

5.      Dust the rest of the surfaces and vacuum/mop the floor. Do not forget the basics!

6.      Invest in something to spruce up your space. After you reset and refresh your home office, reward yourself with a small upgrade to help make your space more enjoyable or productive. New pens, a new candle, an essential oil diffuser, or even a small plant to add a little greenery. The point is to refresh and improve your space, so find what works for you!
