5 Ways to Combat Winter Skin
The weather is turning colder which can feel brisk and invigorating, but oftentimes our skin does not agree. Colder weather can bring dry skin and chapped lips, which are not fun to deal with when all you want to do is throw a snowball or take a refreshing walk around the neighborhood while bundled in your coat. Check out these ways to combat common winter skin problems so you can feel soft and satisfied all winter.
1. Wear sunscreen. Without the reminder of the summer heat, we often forget to wear sunscreen. However, it is important to make sure your skin is protected from the sun even when the weather turns cold. This is doubly important if you participate in winter sports like skiing or snowboarding because you are at a higher altitude where the air is thinner and you are more prone to sun damage.
1. Moisturize often. It can be a good idea to keep a small bottle of moisturizer with you to ward off the damaging effects of cold wind on your skin (bonus points if it contains SPF)!
2. Keep up your water intake. Just because you are not sweltering under the summer sun does not mean you do not need to stay hydrated! Maintaining your water intake can help keep your skin hydrated in the chilly, dry months of winter.
3. Protect your lips. The sensitive skin of your kisser can be very susceptible to damage during the winter, so be sure to keep them protected with lip balm or petroleum jelly.
4. Turn down the temperature of your shower. Due to the chilly weather, you might be tempted to crank up the heat in your bath or shower. However, bathing in very hot water can be extremely hot water can be very drying for your skin. Instead, choose warm water and a gentle touch—your skin will thank you!
