Vitamin D’s Role in the Body

Vitamin D is also known as the “sunshine vitamin.”

You have probably heard that getting sufficient amounts of vitamin D is important, or you have seen foods in the grocery store advertising that they are fortified with it. But what is the purpose of vitamin D in the body? “Vitamin D is necessary for building and maintaining healthy bones. That's because calcium, the primary component of bone, can only be absorbed by your body when vitamin D is present. Your body makes vitamin D when direct sunlight converts a chemical in your skin into an active form of the vitamin (calciferol)…Without vitamin D your bones can become soft, thin and brittle.”

Since vitamin D is so important for bones but your body cannot make it without assistance from the sun, it can become essential to get it from other sources if going outside in the sunshine is not always an option. “Vitamin D isn't found in many foods, but you can get it from fortified milk, fortified cereal, and fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines.”[1] If you are a fan of Bod•ē Pro, you are in luck because three of your favorite products—Strong, Happy, and Strong OG—all feature a boost of vitamin D! Of course, if you are concerned that you might not be getting enough vitamin D, you should talk to your physician before making any major dietary changes. Also, even though you can get vitamin D from the sun, exercise moderation and wear sunscreen—it is possible to get too much of a good thing!
